The plaque commemorates the centenary of the Tongala Public Hall which was opened in 1901. It also pays tribute to the Shire of Deakin architect and engineer A.E. Castles.

The opening of the Tongala Public Hall took place on Tuesday night. The concert room was nicely draped in suitable colors by Mr. and Mrs. Castles, with assistants.  Mr. Gunn, president of the Deakin Shire, took the chair, and in a few brief remarks introduced the Hon. J. Morrissey, Minister of Agriculture, who gave a splendid address in his usual clear and fluent style, dwelling principally on the advantage of such a hall in Tongala, the erection of which he said reflected the greatest credit on the enterprise of the residents.

The hall is of brick, and was built by W.W. Moore and Sons, of Echuca, to tho entire satisfaction of the architect, Mr. A. E. Castles, who has been most attentive to see that the whole of the work was up to specifications.
