Deer Park Honour RollPrint Page
The honour roll commemorates those who served in World War Two.
Last Saturday marked a great day in the happenings of Deer Park for the Avenue of Honor and the Honor Roll were handed over to ex-service personnel. The Avenue of Honor is the reserve on Ballarat Road which is maintained by I.C.I. The trees, desert ash, were planted four years ago by the Council and are now growing into fine specimens. Mainspring behind the project has been Cr. J. B. Salmond, who, when he took his seat on the Council, moved as his first motion that the site be made available for this purpose. In his introductory remarks, Cr. Salmond said that the people of Deer Park were grateful to the Council and to the I.C.I. company for their efforts, Nameplates were affixed to the trees by ex-servicemen or their relatives in the order in which they had been drawn by ballot.
Following the opening of the avenue an adjournment was made to the local hall where the Honor Roll, which had been placed there by public subscription, was unveiled by the Shire President (Cr. A. Beachley). In his remarks Cr. Beachley thanked the ex-servicemen for their help to Australia in its time of peril. The reply on behalf of ex-service personnel was entrusted to Wallace Hunter. Mrs L Terrill was given the honor of playing the National Anthem in appreciation of the services rendered by her late husband, who as treasurer was responsible for most of the money raised for the Honor Roll. Cr. R. Barrett thanked the ladies for supplying afternoon tea and thanks were also accorded to Mr. Harold Cunnington (secretary) and the committee, Messrs Tom Stevenson (who made the honor roll), F. Richards, O. Mitchell and W. Hunter The latter was responsible for mustering the ex-service personnel. Cr.Barrett was especially thanked for presenting the nameplates.
