The plaque commemorates the 'Pathfinders' Wing of the Royal Air Force and the associated Air Forces attached during World War Two. It is also dedicated to the Australian born founder and leader, Air Vice Marshall Don Bennett, CB., C.B.E., DSO. ,F.R.A.E.S. ( 14. 9. 1910 - 15. 9. 1986)
The Pathfinders were utilised by the Air Forces for increased precision bombing and targeting of sites, through use of navigational beams and incendiary (or fire) bombs, to direct other following aircraft. The death toll was 47% amongst crews and included more than 500 Australians.

This memorial is dedicated to the memory of all Pathfinders
Being members of the Royal Air Force or members of the Air Forces attached to the R.A.F.
Some 3,800 Pathfinders being 47% of the force including nearly 500 Australians, lost their lives in flying 50,490 operational sorties against 3,440 enemy targets in Europe. Between 14 Aug 1942 and 08 May 1945 they flew as crew members in Wellington, Stirling, Halifax, Lancaster and Mosquito aircraft in the following Squadrons of Bomber Command R.A.F. 7, 35, 83, 109, 156, 97, 405 (CAN), 15,139, 627, 635, 582, 142, 614.
To the memory of our supporting crews in the Light Night Striking Force and others flying in the following Squadrons of 8 Group, Bomber Command R.A.F. 571, 692, 608, 128, 162, 163, 1409.
