Victory in Europe & Victory in the PacificPrint Page
The plaques commemorate Victory in Europe (VE) and Victory in the Pacific (VP) during World War Two.
Victory in Europe Day, generally known as VE Day, was celebrated on May 8, 1945 to mark the formal acceptance by the Allies of World War Two of Nazi Germany`s unconditiional surrender of its armed forces. The formal surrender of the German forces occupying the Channel Islands did not occur until the following day, May 9, 1945. It thus marked the end of World War Two in Europe.
VP (Victory in the Pacific) Day, also referred to as VJ (Victory over Japan) Day, is celebrated on 15 August. This date commemorates Japan’s acceptance of the Allied demand for unconditional surrender 14 August 1945. For Australians, it meant that the Second World War was finally over.
The following day, 15 August, is usually referred to as VP Day. In August 1945 Australian governments gazetted a public holiday as VP Day and most newspapers reported it as such.
