H.M.A.S. Canberra -St Marks ChapelPrint Page Print this page

The window was erected in memory of those who sailed in HMAS Canberra and those who lost their lives while serving on her during World War Two.

HMAS Canberra, named for Australia's capital, was a heavy cruiser of the Kent sub-class of County class cruiser. Built in Scotland in the late 1920s, during the Second World War she plied the Indian Ocean between Ceylon, South Africa and Australia before being reassigned to convoy duties around New Guinea and the Pacific region. During the Battle of Savo Island on 9 August 1942, she was badly damaged and it was decided to evacuate the ship; she was then sunk by United States Navy destroyers.
