H.M.A.S. Vampire, Nestor & AruntaPrint Page
The window was erected by Bing Crosby in memory of those who lost their lives in the sinking of the HMAS Vampire on the 9th April 1942, the sinking of HMAS Nestor on the 17th June 1942 and the HMAS Arunta which was damaged on the 5th January 1945.
HMAS Vampire was one of the old First World War destroyers that in 1939 German Propaganda Minister Goebbels labelled as a 'consignment of junk, Australia's scrap iron flotilla'. The ships HMAS Stuart, Vendetta, Voyager, Waterhen and Vampire, wore the name as a badge of honour. HMAS Vampire was sunk off the coast of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) on 9 April 1942. HMAS Nestor was one of the 'N' Class Destroyers lost in action on 17 August 1942. Tribal Class destroyer HMAS Arunta commemnced her service on 30 Mar 1942 and, although she suffered damage in action in January 1945, remained one the RAN fleet until 21 Dec 1957.
