H.M.A.S. Australia 11Print Page Print this page

The left-hand light of a three-light window, was dedicated to HMAS Australia II, heavy cruiser of 10,000 tons and oft times Flagship of the Australian fleet which served from 1928 to 1955 and is dedicated to those who lost their lives in World War Two.

At the top of the window the artist has placed a small image of the cross, with the insignia of HMAS Australia including its motto, 'Endeavour', below. Two images of the ship were inserted, each displaying the camouflage profiles in different theatres of war and at different times - 1939-1942 and 1942-1945. As well as the dedicatory plaque, an inscription in the window reads: 'Dedicated to the Glory of God and in memory of the 87 men of HMAS Australia who lost their lives in World War II, and all who served in her'.

H.M.A.S. Australia II operated in support of United States naval and amphibious operations throughout South-East Asia until the start of 1945, including involvement in the battles at the Coral Sea and Savo Island, the amphibious landings at Guadalcanal and Leyte Gulf, and numerous actions during the New Guinea campaign. During World War II she earned eight battle honours

During the late 1940s, Australia served with the British Commonwealth Occupation Force in Japan, and participated in several port visits to other nations, before being retasked as a training ship in 1950. The cruiser was decommissioned in 1954, and sold for scrapping in 1955.
