Square Mile Roll of Honour Print Page
The pictorial roll of honour commemorates those from the district who served in World War Two.
A very impressive ceremony was performed at the Square Mile School on Sunday afternoon, December 14. The President of the Welcome Home Committee (Mr. W. B. Carter) introduced the following speakers to the residents of Square Mile; Archdeacon Redding of Christ Church, Mount Gambier; Mr. Carthew, President of the RSSILA; Mr. Crouch, President of the Legion of Ex servicemen and Women. In his address, Mr. Carthew referred to the splendid work done by the Red Cross of the district. He was sure the Roll of Honour would serve as an inspiration to the descendants of those whose photos appeared thereon. To avoid war it was necessary to be prepared Mr. Carthew said. The soldiers fully appreciated the work done by those at home. In a short speech Mr. Crouch commented on the fine effort by the Square Mile soldiers.
In an inspiring address, Archdeacon Redding, a veteran of World Wars I and II, said the main thought of the soldiers was the protection of their homes. He recounted his many experiences Square Mile was fortunate, in a way to have lost only two young men, Ptes J. Smith and L. Clarke, from so many who enlisted from such a small district. He thought that perhaps it would be better to pay a visit to the many soldiers who were inmates of hospitals than to pay homage to a memorial. In officially unveiling the Roll of Honour he deemed it a great priviledge to have been asked to perform the ceremony. This address was followed by two minutes silence in respect of those who did not return. Mr. Saffin of the Committee then proposed a vote of thanks to the visitors and Mr. Carthew recited the Soldiers' Creed. Apologies were received from those who were unable to attend among whom were Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Clark, whose son, Pte. L. Clark, paid the supreme sacrifice.
