Saint Hilda's War Memorial Print Page
The electric chimes in the church commemorate parish members who died in service or were killed in action in World War Two.
At the Special Anzac Service held in St. Hilda's Church last Sunday, a large gathering of worshippers assembled to commemorate the Fallen, and to take part in the Dedication of the Electric Chimes which had been donated by Mr. "Bill" Bailey in the memory of those from Katoomba who paid the supreme sacrifice.
Before the Dedication the Rector thanked Mr. Bailey, not only on behalf of the parishioners of St. Hilda's, but on behalf of the citizens, for the gift of such a suitable memorial. When they were played on special occasions, they would be a reminder to all who heard them of the noble sacrifice of the cream of our manhood and a challenge to all to live the things for which they died. The chimes, which can be heard over a radius of two miles, chimed "Joy to all the World" as Mr. Bailey and the Church Wardens proceeded to the Tower Porch for the Dedication. The Memorial Tablet reads: "The Electric Chimes in this Church are the gift of Mr. 'Bill' Bailey, in memory of the men who gave their lives in the Great War, 1939—1945." The adaptability of the gift was demonstrated when, during the solemn act of Commemoration, the same equipment sounded the Last Post and Reveille inside the church, thus adding to the solemnity of the occasion.
