The plaque commemorates the 75th anniversary of the opening of the Woolenook Bend Internment Camp where 264 Japanese internees worked during World War Two cutting wood for the Renmark and Berri pumping stations and river steamers.

to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the opening of the
Woolenook Bend Internment Camp
on this site on Thursday May 7th 1942.
During World War II this camp held up to 264 Japanese internees who cut wood to supply the Renmark and Berri pumping stations.
The wood was carted from here to Renmark by Captain Bob Reed and his steamer, the P. S. Ulonga and the barges Mallara and Aurora.
The camp was guarded by the 25th / 33rd Garrison Battalion under Lieutenant E. G. Jones and later Captain T. S. Brown.
The camp was closed on Sunday 6th May 1945.
