Lobethal Roll of HonourPrint Page
The honour roll commemorates those who served in World War Two.
Honor Rolls were unveiled by Brig. M. J. Moten on Sunday, April 25th, 1948, which are erected at the entrance of the Lobethal Centennial Hall in honor and memory of those who served in World Wars I and II. Mr. P. C. Gibbs, chairman of the Lobethal Progress Association and Honor Rolls committee, outlined the work leading to the compilation of the rolls, in paying tribute to those who served in all branches of the Services. He stressed the difficulty the committee had had in separating the volunteers and members of the A.M.F. as all played their parts in the defence of Australia and keeping the enemy from our shores. The chairman then introduced Mr. T. J. H. Davids, a veteran of World War I, who he said had been a prisoner of war in Germany, and a very active member of the committee.
He called on him to introduce Brigadier Moten. Mr. Davids said they were honored in having one of South Australia's most distinguished soldiers to unveil the honour rolls of the World Wars. He commended the Progress Association on its initiative and whole hearted support in procuring the rolls and thanked especially Mr. J. D. Manuel, sceretary, who compiled them, also the public who had responded so Brigadier Moten said it was most fitting that the Honour Rolls should be unveiled on ANZAC Day. He said very few realised how near Australia was to invasion by the Japanese in the dark days of 1943 and but for these men we might well have suffered the plight of other countries devastated by war. The Brigadier recalled having been honored to lead the Australian contingent in the Victory March in London where he had had an opportunity of seeing the war damage in some European countries, which was beyond description.
