The gardens commemorate those who have served in the various conflicts in which Australia has been involved.

In 1949 the Norman Park RSL purchased two allotments of land adjoining their Norman Park Services Bowls Club at 43 Norman Avenue, Norman Park.  On these two blocks they constructed The Norman Park War Memorial which comprised a tapered monument and flagpole. Attached to the monument was a round plaque, which was inscribed with “Lest We Forget” within a laurel wreath.

In August of 2002 the existing monument was demolished and a new Norman Park War Memorial was built. This new memorial was designated Norman Park Memorial Gardens and was constructed by the National Servicemen’s RSL Sub-branch.

The rebuilt Norman Park Memorial Gardens was designed around the theme to acknowledge and commemorate the Royal Australian Navy, the Australian Army and the Royal Australian Air Force.  This was achieved by the use of three items which are indicative of the three services and were arranged on the site in order of seniority from left to right  an Anchor for the Navy, a L5 field gun for the Army and a Caribou propeller for the Air Force.

Behind the gun front piece are three flagpoles upon which are flown the Ensigns of the ADF’s three services, Navy, White ensign; Army, National flag; Air Force, Blue ensign.

The rebuilt site was dedicated in March 2003, at a joint public dedication ceremony and parade attended by the members of both the Norman Park and the National Servicemen’s RSL Sub-branches.
