St Mark`s Memorial WindowsPrint Page
Stained glass windows commemorate parishioners who have died in service or were killed in action during conflicts in which Australia has been involved since 1914.
The central or triptychal section of the East Window is a window from the original St Mark’s Church. A newer section, added when it was transferred into the current church, includes Coats of Arms of the Australian Army, Navy and Air Force as well as the Red Cross and a shield of St Mark. The windows (including the smaller north and south windows on either side of the Altar) form a war memorial, the inscription on which reads: “This group of windows is dedicated to the Glory of God and in loving memory of the men and women of this parish who made the supreme sacrifice in world conflicts since 1914 and is a thanks offering from those who cherish the freedom thus ensured by their sacrifice”. The Roll of Honour at the West end of the church lists the names of all those from the parish who served in WW1. The central portion of the East window, depicting Christ Crucified and a fallen soldier at the foot of the Cross, is a memorial to Lt. John (Jack) Treverne Hockin, who died in the first charge at the Battle of Pozieres on 29 July 1916 aged 33 years. The window was presented to St mark's Albion by his mother and sisters. Jack Hockin had attended both Brisbane Grammar School and The Southport School. The original window was unveiled and dedicated in the old church on 29 July 1917, the first anniversary of his death.
