Kalgoorlie Ex-Servicemen`s Memorial ClubhousePrint Page
The Kalgoorlie Ex-Servicemen`s Memorial Clubhouse commemorates those who served in the various conflicts in which Australia has been involved.
I hear that the Kalgoorlie RSL sub-branch has decided to accept as members men of the VDC. I think all RSL branches should accept these men, who now are left out of everything. The VDC was made up largely of experienced bushmen whose superior knowledge of the outback, particularly the north, would have proved valuable had fighting reached our shores.
These men took the same oath to serve, wore the King's uniform, were trained and equipped as soldiers by a Government that admitted their necessity. Therefore, I believe that these men and their families are entitled to the same benefits other servicemen receive. True they saw no action, but neither did thousands who never left Australia. And, incidentally, neither did thousands who did leave Australia, but who now wear returned from active service and RSL badges. What does the RSL say ? . —Equality For All, West Leederville.
RSL State secretary J. J Chappell: "We honour the men of the VDC for the job they did but under the present constitution the RSL can admit only men who saw service overseas. Kalgoorlie RSL is forming a club called the Kalgoorlie - Memorial Ex-Servicemen's Club. Its constitution and rules provide for admission of former members of the VDC to the club, but not to the League.
