The memorial commemorates the men who served in the Australian Defence Forces as National Servicemen from 1951 to 1972.

Between 1951 and 1972, young Australian men were called up in two separate schemes for compulsory training in the Navy, Army and Air Force.  Of them, 212 died on active service in Borneo and Vietnam. National Service was part of Australia’s defence preparedness for three decades

A Brief History
This plaque is dedicated to the foresight and wisdom of a small group of National Servicemen and Partners who, at this site on 10 July 2001 at 1100 hours celebrated and unveiled the first NASHO`s memorial in Port Macquarie.
Port Macquarie Sub Branch foundation members were :
Vic and Betty Figge, Bernie and Joan Power, Denis and Carmel Dick,
Charles and Pat Edmondson, Henry Hogno and Faye Carter

An Outline of National Service in Australia
Between 1951 and 1972, a total of 290,000 young Australian men were called up in two separate schemes for compulsory training in the Navy, Army and Air Force.  Of them, 212 died on active service in Borneo and Vietnam.  National Service was part of Australia`s defence preparedness for three decades.

The First Scheme 1951 - 1959
In this scheme all oung men aged 18 years were required to register for National Service Training in all the Forces to fulfil the countries military commitments in Korea, the Malayan Emergency and the Viet Minh uprising against the French in Vietnam.  A total of 227,000 served in 52 intakes.

The Second Scheme 1965-1972
In the second scheme, men aged 20 years were selected by Birthday Ballot for the Army
