Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander MemorialPrint Page Print this page

The plaque commemorates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women who have served in the various conflicts in which Australia has been involved.

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flag was raised above Rockingham RSL sub-branch for the first time last month as the community gathered to honour indigenous Australians who have fought to defend our country.

Last Post was accompanied by the didgeridoo on October 23, as Rockingham RSL president Mick Ryan formally unveiled a plaque recognising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders who have fought in defence of the country. Mr Ryan said every returned serviceman, irrespective of race, deserved respect from the country he served.

Honouring Indigenous War Graves president John Schnaars told the tale of the sad plight of Aboriginal veterans who were often shunned or mistreated on their return to Australia. He said the day's ceremony and the unveiling of a memorial plaque were important steps in moving towards a mutual understanding of culture.

Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels spoke of the indigenous service people who, despite their sacrifice, courage and commitment to Australia, returned to a society where their contribution was largely ignored. He said he was thankful Australia had matured since then, and their role had been recognised and celebrated as a significant part of Australian history.
