Mareeba United Church Memorial PulpitPrint Page
The pulpit in the church was originally erected in memory of those members of the Mareeba United Church who served and those who died in World War One.The pulpit contains plaques which list the names of the fallen. Additional plaques were added to the pulpit on ANZAC Day 1949 to commemorate those from the congregation who served in World War Two and lists the names of the fallen from that conflict.
A really fine thing in Soldiers' Memorials for this hamlet is the imposing new pulpit erected in the United Church in memory of those of its soldier members who fell in the war. Mr. Lawson (sawmill) gave the timber, silky oak, beautifully marked, and cut on the quarter, to show off the beauty of its tracery to the fullest advantage. Members of the congregation subscribed the necessary funds to pay for the work to be done. Mr. W. Hastie, senior, one of the pioneers of the church, a choir member almost from its opening (if not actually so), and an indefatigable worker, was intrusted with the work of making the pulpit, and is to be complimented on his handiwork. The names of the soldiers, the Honor Board of the Church, have yet to be inscribed in the forefront of the pulpit. The Rev. McLaren had the honor of delivering the first sermon from the new pulpit. Mr. Lawson is to be thanked for his generous gift of such beautiful wood, also the people who subscribed to enable the work to be done, sawmiller, contractor, people, each and all may look with pride on the Soldiers' Memorial they have raised.
Northern Herald (Cairns, Qld.), 10 September 1919.
Note : The pulpit was originally part of the United Church, then the Presbyterian Church of Australia. In 2011 the church was bought by the ‘Abundant Life Centre.' The pulpit is in their chapel and can only be seen by appointment - 07 4092 5004.
