In honour and memory of those that have served and those that sacrificed their life in war, conflicts or peace keeping.
Lest We Forget
This Karumba cenotaph was provided with funding requested by the Carpentaria Shire Council and received from the Queensland Government under the Flexible Funding Programme, Department of Local Government Community Recovery and Resilience.
The granite rock represents a slouch hat, the path a crucifix and aircraft. The brass emblems signify the Navy, Army and Air Force. In place of the Australian Army written on the rising sun badge are the words Australia Imperial Force this signifies the rising sun badge worn by Australian soldiers at Gallipoli.
This cenotaph is fittingly situated at Sunderland Park. A Sunderland is an aircraft better known as a flying boat. The Norman River in front of the memorial was the take-off and landing area for the flying boats. 43 Squadron RAAF flew their first mission in World War II from Karumba.
The memorial is positioned so the rising sun shines onto the face of the cenotaph.
