Northern Tasmanian Cricket Association War Service Memorial Print Page
The grandstand was erected to commemorate members of the North Tasmanian Cricket Association who died in service or were killed in action in World War One and World War Two. The foundation stone was laid on the 28th November 1950.
The Governor (Sir Hugh Binney) yesterday set the foundation stone of the new grandstand at the Launceston Cricket Ground 12 days after the old grandstand and pavilion were destroyed by fire. Sir Hugh commended the spirit in which the challenge had been accepted. Launceston, of its own accord had decided to rebuild the grandstand and was doing much of this work by voluntary labour. "It is a spirit I commend very much, and I am sure that you will have suitable accommodation completed for the visit of the M.C.C team," he said. The chairman of the North Tasmanian Cricket Association (Mr. H. Bushby) said the association was indebted to numerous people who had helped so willingly, but pointed out that there was still a lot to do.
He announced that the new grandstand would take the form of a war memorial in honour of association members who died during the two World Wars. Mr Barnard M.H.A. representing the State Government, made an appeal to the public to continue its support of such a worthy scheme. On his arrival at the ground the Governor inspected a party of Launceston Grammar School cadets. During the ceremony £226 was donated towards the new grandstand.
