The park commemorates those from the District who served in World One. The park contains the War Memorial which commemorates those from the District who died in service or were killed in action.
The chairman of the Drayton Shire Council (Councillor J. Platz) called meeting of the public which was held during the month of January 1923. From that meeting a committee was formed to take in hand the raising of funds to erect a memorial to the fallen soldiers of Drayton and district. Councillor Platz was appointed Chairman, Mrs E. Atkinson, secretary and Mrs. Lynch as treasurer. The first business was to procure a suitable site. Application was made to the Lands Department for a small reserve right in the heart of the little township, which was later granted to the committee free of cost. The site in most admirably situated. It is a triangular piece of land, bounded on all sides by a road, and is on the main road along which all the traffic to the district must pass, and which is also the main road to Warwick and the South.
The early efforts of the committee were bent towards suitably fencing in the plot of ground, which was done by the erection of a picket fence, which was carried out by voluntary labour, and the material paid for by voluntary subscription. From time to time contributions were added to the fund, and social efforts organised, until it was at last felt that tenders might be called for the erection of the memorial. It has been the desire of the committee, all through, that the memorial should be unveiled and dedicated free of debt: hence their hesitation to proceed with the work at too early a stage.
