A cairn commemorates surveyors and has scientific and historical significance as a trigonmetrical station and as a reference point marker which can be seen from land & sea. 

The Point Hillier Cairn is thought to have been built between 1876 and 1879. It is assumed to have been built by Captain W E Archdeacon RN while engaged in a hydrographic survey between Cape Leeuwin and Esperance.
