A plaque commemorates the inlet of water into the dam in 1931.

Moving a lever, the chairman of the Board of Works (Mr D. Bell) today opened the main inlet channel to the new Silvan Dam, allowing the water to rush into the basin. The simple ceremony was watched by a party of Commissioners and officers of the Board of Works. The event assured the metropolis of a plentiful supply of water for many years to come. When the dam is full there will be enough water stored for a population of two million people in Melbourne.
