The cairn commemorates Sydney Walker who worked in the Field Service for Santos at Moomba Gas Field.

The crossing was named after Walker after he suffered a massive heart attack in 1986 while practicing cricket. When an attempt was made to steal the plaque off the memorial it was removed to Moomba Gas Field for safe-keeping but is now affixed to the cairn at the crossing.
