This cairn was erected by the citizens of Mordialloc to commemorate the first permanent white settler in the district,

Alexander MacDonald.

whose homestead was built near this spot in 1845 and also to commemorate the Boonurrong Aboriginal tribe whose camping grounds were also along the banks of the Mordialloc Creek
