The New Guinea Martyrs

During the Second World War the Japanese Imperial Army invaded Papua New Guinea in 1942.

On the far north coast of Papua these was a Chistian Mission at Dogura.  Here one of own parishioners, Sr Margaret Brenchley, provided nursing care to the local people.  When news of the invasion reached the missionaries they decided not to evacuate but to stay and continue to serve the people.

The Japanese Imperial Army brutally murdered the twelve Anglicans by beheading or bayonetting.

We remember and honour the twelve at this Memorial Altar.
