The marble plaque commemorates Reverend John Ernest Clayton, five years in charge of the South Sea Islanders Mission in the parish, who died in 1895.
Reverend Clayton, born in England, came to Bundaberg in 1891, during the time of Reverend William Morris, as a missionary to the South Sea Islander community who had been brought forcibly to work in the sugar industry. He is reported to have been very energetic in his mission with 395 islanders on the roll and an average of 222 meeting for worship on Sunday.
He died in 1895, and the Islander community paid tribute to him by having a unique headstone erected at the grave which he shares with his wife.
