The sculptures, consisting of a group of five bronze figures, and commissioned by the Catholic Diocese of Parramatta, commemorates its founder, the former Pope, Saint John Paul II.

He established the Diocese of Parramatta to better serve the Catholic people of Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains, and visited the Diocese during his pontificate shortly after its creation in 1986.
