The Battle of Fromelles

Troops from the Australian 5th Division had their first encounter on the Western Front at Fromelles, France on 19 July 1916.

The Australians were initially successful, capturing the German lines during attacks of the nights of 19 and 20 July.  When reinforcements did not arrive, they were forced to withdraw into no man`s land.  In a period of a little over 24 hours, 5533 Australian casualties were recorded, 1547 British casualties and 1500 German casualties.

Many Australians who died had previously fought in the Gallipoli Campaign.
It is said that the Australian 5th Division fought with courage and honour.
