The monument commemorates five Aboriginal brothers who fought in World War Two.

At the onset of the World War One and Two it was known that both white and indigenous men in Western Australia`s northern pastoral regions put to down their tools and enlisted. Five indigenous brothers who grew up in the Whim Creek area in the Pilbara did just that. The men lived and worked around several Pilbara pastoral stations including Mallina, Munda and Sherlock.

Arnold and Edgar Lockyer enlisted into the Royal Australian Air Force. Elbert, Elliot and Eric Lockyer enlisted into the Australian Army. Arnold Lockyer, the flight sergeant was just 30 years-old when the aeroplane he was in was shot down over Indonesia. He parachuted out but was captured by the Japanese.

Only three of the five brothers returned home to Western Australia.
