The white marble tablet commemorates Trooper Fred Avard who died in the Boer War.

A memorial tablet was placed on the wall of the Town Hall vestibule on Thursday to the memory of the late Trooper Fred. Avard, one of the Maitland Lancers, who died in the Transvaal last year from wounds received in an engagement. The tablet is of white marble on a background of black marble, surmounted by a broken lance in white marble. The memorial was erected by the comrades of deceased. It bears a suitable inscription.
