The monument commemorates Francis Carleton Burges who died of wounds received in the Battle of the Somme during World War One. The ground was given to the children of Mingenew for their use and benefit.

In loving memory of Francis Carleton Burges 

Younger son of F. L. Burges of Irwin House, Irwin, who died of wounds received in the Battle of the Somme, while serving  with the 2nd Battalion Irish Guards,

17- 11 - 1895  - 19 - 09 - 1916

His memory was ever held dear by all those who knew him
