The tree commemorates Lieutenant Frederick William Bell, a member of the 6th West Australian Mounted Infantry who was a recipient of the Victoria Cross for his gallantry at Brakpan, Transvaal, South Africa during the Boer War.

Bell was born on 3 April 1875 in Perth, Western Australia, and was the first person born in Western Australia to receive the Victoria Cross.
