The gates commemorate Dr E. W. Deane, a former hospital surgeon (1905 - 1916,) who died on active service in Egypt during World War One.

On Wednesday afternoon the gates erected to perpetuate the memory of the late Dr E.W. Deane, in front of the Maryborough Hospital, were formally declared open by the Mayor (Cr G. Frost). The late doctor was for 13 years house surgeon at the hospital, and was universally esteemed for his endearing personality. At the outlbreak of war he served as a captain in the Australian Army Corps and died in Egypt in April, 1916. The gates, which are of handsome design were erected by public subscription.
