The gazebo was erected by the Stockwell family to commemorate the life of William Allan Scrase who died in 1932. William Scrase was a stone mason and brick manufacturer who constructed the Bushmans Arms Hotel and Underground Reservoir. The gazebo was also erected to assist in the preservation of the water reservoir.

Work on the Bushmans Hotel’s water reservoir began in 1891 and was completed in 1893. In 2004 the water reservoir (now known as the Wishing Well) was cleaned out by local volunteers and 60 tonnes of rubbish, including sewing machines, shoes and bottles, was removed.
