The grave commemorates Waubadebar who was an aboriginal woman who saved the life of two European men.

Waubadebar was captured by a party of sealers, probably convicts, on the hunt for aboriginal women. After a successful raid they camped on the beach at Wineglass Bay near Coles Bay but by morning Waubadebar who was aged 15, had gone taking the sealers` kangaroo dogs with her. She was later recaptured and lived to become famous.

She saved her sealer-man and another sealer from drowning in high seas in spite of having broken her arm. She died on a sealer`s boat off Maria Island.
