A plaque at the bottom of Cheviot Bay commemorates Prime Minister Harold Holt who disappeared whilst swimming in the bay in December 1967.

The picture shows Lieutenant Peter Trace,who was Second-in-command of Naval Dive Team 6 that searched for Harold Holt preparing to lay the plaque on the floor of Cheviot Bay.

Harold Edward Holt, CH (5 August 1908 – 17 December 1967) was an Australian politician and the 17th Prime Minister of Australia. His term as Prime Minister was brought to an early and dramatic end in December 1967 when he disappeared while swimming at Cheviot Beach near Portsea, Victoria, and was presumed drowned. Holt spent 32 years in Parliament, including many years as a senior Cabinet Minister, but was Prime Minister for only 22 months.
