The monument commemorates explorer Matthew Flinders who was the first European to discover the Investigator Group of islands in 1802.

On Wednesday, April 28, the Flinders Memorial, which has been erected at the new jetty, Elliston, was unveiled by Mr. W. H. Schlink, grandson of an original settler on Flinders Island. The ceremony commenced with the Elliston school children, under the direction of their teacher, Mr. Baum, saluting the flag, and singing the National Anthem and Song of Australia. Introduced by Mr. G. D. Perrin (district clerk), Mr. Michael Kenny (chairman of the Elliston District Council) gave an address on Captain Matthew Flinders.
