This plaque is laid in honour of Douglas Trevor Mew born 27 3 1932 who on Sunday 13th June, 1971, became the first person on record to successfully conquer the rip by swimming from Pt. Lonsdale to Pt. Nepean.

He completed this feat without a cage, in a time of 61 minutes
