A plaque commemorates Lieutenant John Murray of the ship,  "Lady Nelson" who landed here.

The newly-created Union Jack was raised for the first time in Australia at Point King, two kilometres west of present-day Sorrento, in 1802, to claim the land for Britain. This occurred during a 25-day exploration of Port Phillip Bay by Lieutenant Murray and party in the Lady Nelson
