The Aborigines freely roamed the coastal fringes of the West Coast for thousands of years.
The women were hunters and gatherers forced to swim for food in the freezing West Coast waters

December 1821 the ships Prince Leopold and Sophia left Hobart Town to establish the Macquarie Harbour Penal Settlement.
Aboard were 8 female convicts. These were the first European settlers of Western Tasmania.
Their home - or prison - was Sarah Island. The most wretched outpost in the British Empire.
