The Bicentennial Flagpole commemorates members of the Order of Australia in recognition of their achievements and services to Australia. The height of the flagpole 61 metres (200 feet) symbolises the Bicentenary of Sydney New South Wales and Australia.

The Order of Australia is an order of chivalry established on 14 February 1975 by Elizabeth II, Queen of Australia, to recognise Australian citizens and other persons for achievement or for meritorious service. Before the establishment of the order, Australian citizens received British honours.

BICENTENNIAL FLAGPOLE

The Bicentennial Flagpole is dedicated to the members
of the Order of Australia in recognition of their
achievements and services to Australia. 

It was erected by the Darling Harbour Authority and
Westpac Banking Corporation with assistance from
the Order of Australia Association.

Commissioned by Sir James Foots , Chairman of the
Board, Westpac Banking Corporation, on 25th January 1988.

                   Technical Description

The Bicentennial Flagpole is a tubular steel flagpole of Australian
manufacture located on a pile foundation at the entrance to
Cockle Bay and has a height of 200 feet (61 metres),
a height symbolising the Sydney New South Wales and Australian
                             Bicentenary.
