The monument commemorates the explorer Allan Cunningham and his expedition through the Lockyer Valley in 1829.

On their journey westward Cunningham and his party camped overnight on the Lockyer Creek west of this site on 22nd June, 1829. On their return journey they camped one mile east of Gatton on 29th June, 1829.
