The plaque commemorates the bicentenary of Australia and details the history of the Balmain Swimming and Life Saving Club.

The Bicentenary marked the 200th anniversary of the arrival of the First Fleet in Sydney in 1788. Captain Arthur Phillip (1738–1814), commander of the First Fleet, established the foundations of a British colony at Sydney Cove on the 26 January 1788

Balmain Amateur Swimming and Life Saving Club
(Oldest swimming club in Australia)

This club has swum in these waters since 1883. Among its members have been many swimmers, divers and Water Polo players who have been National Champions and Olympic Team members.

Australia's first water polo game was played here.
