The memorial commemorates the first strike in Queensland which took place in 1861 at the Redbank Mine owned by Campbell and Towns. The memorial is dedicated to the 8 coal miners who went on strike.

A deputation of miners confronted Robert Campbell with a demand for a pay rise of one shilling per ton. Campbell rejected the claim and the miners went on strike. The miners were later arrested and tried for illegally conspiring to injure Campbell's interests. The jury found them not guilty.
