The monument commemorates nine people who were killed when a cliff collapsed near Gracetown.

In 1996, four children and five adults were killed when a limestone cliff collapsed during a school surfing carnival at Gracetown in Western Australia. The victims` families established a temporary memorial at the South Point car park shortly after the tragedy and the Shire to decided replace it with a permanent one, directly above the collapse site itself.
