The cairn at site of the Australasian No 2 mine which was flooded in December 1882 drowning twenty-two men. Five men were rescued. The cairn was unveiled on the 100th anniversary of the disaster. 

Over three days, a frantic rescue was attempted to find 27 men underground.

Front Inscription

This cairn marks the site of the New Australasian Gold Mining Company No. 2 shaft, the workings of which were flooded on 12th December 1882, entombing 27 miners, 22 of whom lost their lives despite heroic efforts to save them.

The names of the dead miners are inscribed on the obelisk erected in the Creswick Cemetery.

Unveiled by Hon. John Cain, Premier of Victoria

12 December 1982.
