In 1870 Ulverstone held Australia`s first axeman competition and the first recorded chopping contest took place in 1870 between Tasmania`s Joseph Smith and Victoria`s Jack Briggs.

On this site the wager was laid which led to the first recorded chopping event in the world in 1870 between Joseph Smith of Ulverstone and Jack Biggs from Victoria.
