A memorial marks the spot where the wager was made on the first recorded woodchopping contest.

In 1870 Ulverstone held Australia`s first axeman competition and the first recorded chopping contest took place in 1870 between Tasmania`s Joseph Smith and Victoria`s Jack Briggs.
