World Youth Day Print Page Print this page

The plaque commemorates World Youth Day and the life of Pope John Paul II.

World Youth Day is a youth oriented Catholic Church event. While the event celebrates the Catholic religion the invitation extends to all youth regardless of religious conviction. The plaque, which honours the life of World Youth Day founder, Pope John Paul II, was commissioned by Hansen & Cole regional director Warwick Hansen and presented to the Wollongong diocese. As a Catholic, Mr Hansen said he wanted to do something special to commemorate Wollongong`s role in the 2008 WYD event which was held in Sydney. The bronze plaque is only the second of its kind in the world. The other plaque hangs in the Vatican.
