Nagoya Gardens were established to celebrate the relationship between the City of Sydney and its Sister City of Nagoya in Japan. The gardens were refurbished in 2004.

In 1956, not long after World War Two,  the president of the United States Dwight D. Eisenhower established the Sister City programme to foster international understanding and peace. The Nagoya Gardens in Hyde Park were named in 1983.

Sister cities are cooperative agreements between towns and cities, and politically distinct areas to promote cultural and commercial ties.
