A monument commemorates the establishment of the Wollongong Surf Bathing and Life Saving Club at what is now known as North Wollongong Beach in 1908.
A public meeting was held in the Council Chambers on the night of Monday, January 6, 1908. Its purpose was to form a Surf Bathing and Life Saving Club. The attendance was close to one hundred people of which the Mayor, Alderman W J Wiseman presided.
